What it means to exhibit

Exhibiting work is an opportunity for artists to emerge from the studio and connect with friends and others in the art world. Most of all, it is a time to celebrate.

“I remember the first time people had a reaction to, or an emotion toward, something I was doing,” said Chris Harvey, a TDS teaching artist whose work will be part of the show.

A drawing and painting major at the University of Connecticut in the 1980s, Chris said he took every figure class he could. Mastering the human form became his inspiration.

“At the time I drew really big with charcoal and I was on the floor, totally immersed in it,” Chris continued. “A bunch of students crowded around, watching me draw. It was one of those great moments where I realized, wow, someone appreciates what I’m doing! It really pumps you up when someone has a reaction to your piece.”

The magic of art shows

An art show is “one of the most energetic and fun events to attend,” said Tanya Rich, who curates the TDS exhibits. “Right up there with music, it evokes a buzz and excitement,” she continued. “Plus it’s a fun way to find out what aesthetics or artists make sense to you.”

“Curating is equally creative,” Chris added. “You have to have a vision to curate. You’re pairing people, styles and sensibilities.”
